HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country near the Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after a major disaster in 1986. Its a dark creepy world and the game reflects that vibe.
You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As someone with a military readiness badge, you know your duty: slap on a broken gas mask, grab your vz. 52 pistol, and protect the peace of your socialist homeland from weird intruders. The game feels like a 90s old school shooter with that gritty brown retro aesthetic that screams classic FPS.
You’ll find weapons like a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher, and even a crazy experimental Soviet weapon powered by batteries. If you run out of ammo, though, don’t worry—you can always use a hammer and sickle to fight back.
The levels are handcrafted and inspired by real locations packed with historical details. Each level has tons of socialist memorabilia you won’t find anywhere except museums or maybe your grandma’s attic (if she was in the Eastern Bloc). Expect flushable toilets, destructible light bulbs, and even horses wearing gas/latex masks. Its all about conservative values that never let you down.
The game runs on a custom engine written in Pascal, giving it that classic 1990s software rendering look, with unfiltered textures and a bit of that nostalgic polygon jitter.
